For several years, local resident volunteers Colleen and Rose run a coffee morning each Friday, funded by Bountagu. The sessions are well-established, and moved to St Peter’s Church in 2018. They have about 20 people coming regularly, but there’s no commitment to attend each week. The venue is ground level, easily accessible, and easily reached via 191 or W8 buses for those further than walking distance.
The main idea is to encourage informal connections amongst local over 50s that don’t get out much,, make friends, have a chat, and for several regular attendees, to provide a reason to leave their homes and engage with others. They offer free tea, coffee, biscuits and cake, alongside card games, quizzes and sometimes crafts. Sometimes they organise trips away or have speakers in, and will often organise activities involving young people or young parents, to encourage local cross-generational mixing. Since 2019, they have a children’s area with some toys and colouring books, to encourage new parents to come with their young ones, letting them play while mum or dad enjoys a cuppa. Bountagu subsidises the full costs of the beverages, biscuits and venue hire, in order to keep the activity free for participants. Donations – both monetary and in-kind – are welcomed and added to the general 50+ group’s funds.
